The third USN ship to bear the name, Yosemite was laid down on 19 January 1942 by the Tampa Shipbuilding Company at Tampa, Florida; launched on 16 May 1943 and commissioned on 25 March 1944, Capt. George C. Towner in command.

  • Mac, I was on her the same time as you, got there about a month before deployment, worked in the Foundry 81A and made Chief on here in 93 and decommed the ol lady
  • I was the DCA on board the YO-YO from 1991 to 1994. Made the Persian Gulf cruise, I was also the last CDO on her. I decomed her. Had a lot of fun onboard.

  • My dad was on the Yosemite back in the '60's. I remember the crew used to call her the yoyo.I used to enjoy it when he would take me aboard and show me the engine rooms, he was an MM1.

  • Yep, I came from boot and my co told me she was call hotel 19. When I got to Mayport I found out she was in the med. Then went to ship yard in Boston back to Mayport to Haiti, cuba, Mayport and then the Med again. She was like my wife. couldn't sit still. ha. ha.
  • Ron, You must remember when she was called Building 19. I reenlisted for orders to the YoYo because she didn't make cruises. As soon as I got on her she went back to making cruises! Just my luck! It was a fine ship though. I worked in the ship's laundry and the forward ship's store.
