Captain Stark, JAF's first C.O. Message

Shipmates. 41 years ago we were faced with the challenge to Commission JAF
and make her ready to join DESLANT. We did that and with your hard work ,
JAF was the "Last to Commission, First to Deploy".
One year ago some of us gathered together in Charleston to celebrate
JAF's 40th Anniversary and what a party we had. For the first time I was
able to meet and get to know several of you. As you remember, it was the
decision of those present to meet again in 2009 for the 42nd Reunion.

While I would like nothing better, the planning for 2009 has not gone
forward so I am open to meeting with those Plankowners who want
to celebrate the 42nd. It's important to me that I take every opportunity
to join with you to hoist a few while I am still able. And not only to swap
some sea stories but to thank you once again for your support in getting
JAF off to a great start. On this Veteran's Day , I salute you for your
service to our Country. Hope to see you next year as we plan to make
it possible to gather a quorum of Plankowners for the 42nd.

Cheers !! Captain Stark, JAF's first C.O. November 11, 2008

  • It was my privilege to be selected as the Prospective and First C.O. of JAF. I arrived in Bath about 3 months before Commissiong as part of the Nucleus Crew and with that Crew oversaw the final construction and acceptance of JAF into CRUDESLANT . We commissioned the ship 11 Nov. 1967 and I remained onboard thru Ship's acceptance trials and shakedown training. I left JAF because of a medical condition that occured while serving in Vietnam.
