Finished NATTC in Memphis in late 1963 and went to flight training in Key West where I failed the physical because of my eyesight. I reported to HS-3 in Norfolk and made a couple of short cruises on the Intrepid, then was on the 1964 Med Cruise. Also was on the Gemini 3 recovery aboard Intrepid. I did get a waiver and became an air crewman, but never passed a flight physical. Intrepid went into the yards for overhaul in 1965, so we were without a ship. When she came out, they put on light attack aircraft and sent her to Vietnam, but they had no use for an anti-submarine squadron so we stayed in Norfolk.
Went aboard Intrepid in 1954 for her re commissioning. Served in # 4 fire room. Great bunch of guys I worked with; John Hintz (first to re enlist aboard her); Frank Barth; Tom Swindle; Ed Brown; Gordon Tanchin;T.J. Smith; Made BT3 and when I left in '56 found out I made BT2. Never got it. Served as Past President two times for the Former Crew Members Association. Did more work on her in NTC then I did when she was active. Lots of good memories.
