  • I did two Cruises on board one Med and one Vietnam. Things went well on yankee station until the engines craped out. we had a lot of liberty in Po-town.

  • I was aboard America for the 1973-74 Med cruise as an ADJ3 with VF 142 phantom squadron. Got to see so many great places including sailing up the straights of the Dardenells to Istanbul. Pretty wierd as I remember looking down on farm fields and WWII monuments on both sides of the ship! I also remember one "stand down" day on the flight deck we had a barbecue for entire ships company and football game. A Soviet destroyer came up fairly close and we saw the crew on deck with telephoto lenses photographing us... so we all ran to that side of the deck and mooned em!!LOL

Collision at sea

I was with a squadron (RVAH3) on a ten day carrier qual sometime around 70-72 out of Norfolk. Anyway we had a collision with a foreign vessel and I believe it was on the port side but I am not sure. I recall hearing that the fuel lines had been cleared and vented before impact and that it was our fault for not yielding the right of way. We knew the hit was unavoidable about twenty minutes prior. Anyway, the damage wasn't too extensive and was above the water line. Does anyone happen to remember…
