  • Onboard America from Jan '73 - Jul '76,  Somehow remember running aground on the north side of the channel coming into Pier Echo at NORVA.  Several tugs couldn't push us free, had to wait for high tide,  Captain still made Admiral though.

  • I lost my cruise book also, and believe it or not, I found one in mint condition on E-bay..Might wanna give that a try..worked for me...Also, when at the VA last year, there was a guy who won the purple heart, it's taken all these years to get it put in his service jacket..Good luck

  • Hello, I was stationed on board the USS Vreeland FF-1068 during the Med Cruise of 1986 with the America Battle Group.  I was wondering if any one had the 1985-1986 America Cruise Book.  I had a question about the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation from 1985 Ocean Safari. That was the largest Nato Exercise that had ever taken place. I know that there is a copy of the award letter in the cruise book and was wondering how the wording states for the unit to be awarded.  We were involved with that exercise but never received the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation.

    Thanks for your help.

Collision at sea

I was with a squadron (RVAH3) on a ten day carrier qual sometime around 70-72 out of Norfolk. Anyway we had a collision with a foreign vessel and I believe it was on the port side but I am not sure. I recall hearing that the fuel lines had been cleared and vented before impact and that it was our fault for not yielding the right of way. We knew the hit was unavoidable about twenty minutes prior. Anyway, the damage wasn't too extensive and was above the water line. Does anyone happen to remember…
