My first duty station after boot in 66 was VC-1,I was assigned to the target supply office. I was one of only a band full of black shoes attached.
My fellow VC-1 shipmate Phil McCullers visited Barbers Point last fall. He said Nimitz beach is now public, the baseball fields are still there and the old barracks is now a half-way house for released state prisoners. He did not recognize most of the old places on base or on the island. The old hangar is still there.
AMH3 stationed at VC-1 Feb 1973 to Feb 1975 had a great group of friends but have lost touch with...Barbers Point was great hope to travel there in a couple years and see what the decomish did to her...
I served with VC-1 from 1969-1971. I was assigned to the Targets division and was a drone technician and Pad Direct Control Officer for ground launching the BQM-34A. Our crew launched the first drone from the new launch facility at Barking Sands Pacific Missile Range. We had many deployments and ground launch missions. I lived in the barracks on base and shared a cube with Fast Eddy Newman and Phil McCullers. We got together for a camping trip a couple of years ago and had a great time talking about our adventures at VC-1.
I served in VC-1 from Apr. 1966 to May 1969. Spent most of my time attached to AMD supervising the RADAR shop The rest of the time supervising avionics division swing shift. Housing was in Ewa Beach and remember watching The Enterprise enter Pearl Harbor with flight deck blown to hell. Does anyone remember what was tested on the island that was designated a "target range" During this period of time? Or can we talk about that now?
I remember Bugger Red and know Morris Rudick tried to contact him without success just a few years ago. We thought he may no longer be with us???
Bruce Shaw AMS3. p/c on F8K A4C flew on H34, and US2C. Was with VC-1 from 68 to 70. I remember Bryan and Steve. I went to VA-56 at Lemore, and made the first cruse on the Midway after its big overhaul. Dose anybody remember Bugger Red? Was also there for the movie Tora Tora. I put some picts on utility squadron one web site.

Please take a look at the A-4 Skyhawk Association web site at www.a4skyhawk.org. There's a lot of information and you may like to join the group.
I had the chance to visit the old VC-1 hanger last year at Barbers Point. The two years with VC-1 was great!
