  • My name is Rick Hebert (SN Hebert), I served onboard the lex from 77-79.  I was a Yeoman in the captain's office under captain Eugene McDaniel,  I was 1JV at sea and anchor detail as well.  Dis my mess duty in Chief's Mess.  would really like to hear from any of my old buddys from back then.  My bigest memory was going dry dock in New Jersey and going through the Bermuda Triangle.
  • I was stationed on the Lady Lex from 1972 - 1975. I was in V-2 Division arresting gear crew. We used asbestos cloth in pouring sockets. I now have asbestosis and need to prove to the VA that I worked with asbestos in service. If anyone out there could verify this, or knows how to contact a V-2 Maintance Officer from any ship during that time period, please send me the info.
I also spent some time in Plat and Lens, and Cats during my tour. I would like to hear from any old shipmates that remember me just to say hello. you can contact me at rhowell55@gmail.com. I retired ABEC Rick Howell and am now working as a deputy sheriff in Bay county Florida.
  • PURPLE SHIRTS SOME GREAT GUYS

  • My name is Ben Miller. I served on the lady lex from sept '75 to sept '79.
I was a rmsn. Had many good times and served with a lot of great guys. I would love to hear from anyone that served on her during that time.
  • SERVED FROM JAN 71-DEC 72 WAS A PURPLE SHIRT V-4 DIV. BOY SOME OF THOSE YOUNG PILOTS DID SOME CRAZY STUFF.THE MARINES HAD TO FLY ME TO THE SHIP ON HELICOPTER WHEN SOME OF US MISSED THE SHIP DURING HURRICANE AGNES IN 72. REMEMBER THE MARDI GRAW IN 72 IN NEW ORLEANS. THAT WAS A WILD 7 DAYS.
  • Ran out of room. I saw a lot things happen on the Lex. Saw two T28 Trojans go down, lost one student in one. Saw an A4 lose engine control and go over. Saw an A7 launch and flame out and hit the drink. No one killed in that one. Had an A4 catch fire, put it out finally and brought it back to port. Had one guy jump ship, 14 miles from an oil rig. Idiot. Long night that night. Went aground when steering went out, ever see a typewriter fly across a room? Did manuevers with a DE once in the gulf. I've got pictures of a lot of it. Will post soon. What was the dept head, a full Commander, of Ops named, I've forgotten. Great guy, so was Lieutenant Smith. Loved my job. I made up the watch lists! Ha! Too late to complain now.....
  • Sure am glad to find this group! My first station was USMACV Headquarters, Saigon, Vietnam (right next to Tan Son Nhut Airport). When my year came to an end there, I reported to personnel to fill out my request for my possible next duty station. Navy personnel serving in country were allowed to request any station on the planet and stood a pretty good chance of getting it. I, at age 21, put down Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii. The personnel guy looked at me and frowned. Where are you from he asked. Alabama. Here you go, Pensacola, Pensacola, Pensacola. I wish I could find that guy and hug his neck. Best thing that ever happened in my Navy years to me. I was only 200 miles from home, stationed on the USS Lexington. Went to sea on Monday morning, returned on Thursday afternoon almost every week. I loved my duty on Lady Lex. I was a YN4 working in the Operatons office. I got to be around Captain Jack Davis a lot. I got to type the message to NAS Pensacola requesting their interest in putting the Captains launch in the Museum on NAS Pensacola. Why did the Captain want to get rid of the beautiful mahognany launch? He put in for a personnel launch from the Boston shipyards. They approved the request and they sailed it down to Pensacola. Captain Jack outfitted it into a fishing boat. We used to drop anchor coming back from Corpus and go fishing. He'd hurry us all week to get some fishing time in. Good eating I tell you. Hated to leave the Lex. She left for Boston the month after I left. We almost destroyed the fishing pier in Pensacola when we lost steering and went aground. Capt. Jack didn't lose his command either. What a ride! What a tour! More from me later.
  • Hi
I really enjoy this site its well put together tks, one of the first items spoke
about was the lad who walked into the props. I had been on the ship
a week doing mess cooking. I did a split part as cvt and avt, enjoyed my
duty as a signalman. Had plenty of request to enlist to stay but, did not
fully understand how effcient this duty was comparared to fleet sailor.
Never could get back. has any one here been to any lex reunions ?
well when i get my pics out i want to share them maybe some good
times for everone. Pensacola its a good city.

Boston Grounding '73

USS LEXINGTON CVT-16JAN-APR 1973Boston GroundingIt has been more than 40 years since I was stationed on the Lexington for temporary duty, so please bear with me, while some memories are crisp, some others maybe not so much.I was a nuclear power student, a nuc (pronounced as nuke) MM3 fresh out of  “A” school reporting to the Lexington in January 1973 for temporary duty until my school would begin in May.  As I should have expected, my PO3 rank amounted to absolutely zip.  For us Nucs, PO3 was…

70's on the Lex

My name is Art James EM3 assigned to E division. My Navy years were the best years of my life, I served all of them on board the Lexington. I made life long friends and see some to this day. Just had a visit last weekend from Chief Bob Denny and his wife Karen, who I have not seen since 1981. Will never forget New Orleans, Dry dock in Boston, and Gitmo. If anyone ever hears of what ever happened to EM 3 Ed Thomas, I sure would like to know. Take care shipmates.
