  • That's Med not Mef.
  • I remember coming back from the Mef in that storm. I was told the the Admiral told the captain to turn around, but he said we're coming home. That was one of the worst blizzards to hit Norfolk in a while.
  • I served onboard from 77-80 I was a BMSN in 1st Division , it was a great time in my life the best times actually ! We were the 1st ship in the Navy to have women aboard , They came on in 1978 and we were sent to the Med in 79', We hit a pretty nasty storm on the way home that busted our port boat beam loose as well as a Forklift that broke loose on the Boat Deck that did quite a bit of damage !!We (1st Div.) were sent out in the storm to catch and tie them down it would have been funny if it wasn't so dangerous , we looked like the Keystone Kops chasing that forklift around and then we would take a hard roll and it would chase us ! We were all praying that that damn thing would go overboard but it never did !!
  • Made a stop here on AR-5 after MMA-school waitng for nuke school in 1981. Was assigned to main control. Can't really remember anybody except a buddy named Brugnoni. He was really into this new musician named Springsteen. Remember being out at sea and having the evaporators crap out. We had water restriction, no showers, no brushing teeth, etc. One guy got caught with a zip lock bag of water to brush his teeth and went to Captains Mast. We drained condensate from the SSTG to make coffee since nobody in thier right mind would ever go down into the engine room when we were lit off. Also remember new guys getting the tour and as they would pass the engine room hatch the guide would say, "engine room, very hot and full of snipes, we'll skip that".
Yes, sliders from the galley, occasional steak dinners, having dental work done, and music blasting from the berthing areas. That's what I remember most.
  • This was my first command. I was came aboard a young 18 year old in Barcelona, Spain while she was in the middle of a Med Cruise on Dec. 1979. I still remember the Master chief in ML "A" School telling me when he found out I was going to the Vulcan. "Oh thats building 5 at pier 5." When I got to pier 5 in Norfolk there was no ship. Master chief I believe you are incorrect.
