  • I was with VF-41 March 72 - May 75. We were in the Med. on USS Franklin D. Roosevelt most of the time.
  • I wasstationed at Oceana from 1970 to 1980 in VA-42, VA-176, VC-2, and VA-85. Worked at CPO package store off base part-time
  • VA-42 Supply 1968 and 1969
  • was attached to VF-103 water hole was grumpies and the "T" bird inn, remember the winter there, never so cold in my life.
  • I completed my "A" School at NAS Oceana in Nov. "80" and was transferred to VA-85 for my first command. Made two deployments on the USS FORRESTAL (CV-59) & one deployment on the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). Re-inlisted and went to USNS Roosy Rds. P.R. for my Shore Duty from Jul "84 thru Jul "87". Re-inlisted and got transferred to NAS Oceana again to VA-55. Made a deployment on the USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43) during "87-88" curise. Fractured my back on that deployment and was sent back to the States for evaluation and assigned to PNH Portsmouth, VA. and then to VA-42 FRAMP.
  • Now on the entertainment: I made good use of the old Acey Duecey Club off Potter's Road in my days at NASO. I remember the comraderie when our chief would say you guys have done a good job - lets go to the Acey Duecey for lunch. Sometimes, we wouldn't go back to work. In the evenings, we could start at the Acey Duecey, close it, then slid over into the Pink Elephant Room (the old Chief's Club, which became an after hours club at 2am). We had many a fine time there!
We can't leave out the rest of the military clubs in the area. I can remember starting at the enlisted club at NOB, then move to the club at Little Creek. When tired of that scene, we would go the the Acey Duecey. Sometimes we would end up at the Fleet Reserve Club on Oceana Blvd. Remember that one?
  • I did a lot of different things at NASO. I went through VF-101 FRAMP; was stationed with VF-11(with F-4s), TAD to AIMD; was an instructor at NAMTGD 3010 teaching VAST; 'Ships Company' with AIMD in the VAST Shop; and Division Chief in VF-101 with F-14s. I was one of the fortunate ones that was able to stay in this area from 1971 until retirement in 1993. Previously, I had been on the west coast.
I enjoyed my time at this base since there is so much offered in this area. Also, I was big into raquetball and enjoyed good intermural play there. I wasn't any good, but enjoyed myself nonetheless.
I have watched the Navy build two new commissaries at NASO in my time here. Also, a new NEX, then modifying the NEX to expand it when the previous commissary closed its doors. I still live within 3 miles of the runway and here the sounds of freedom all the time!
  • I was at NAS Oceana back in 1993 and 1994. I was assigned to VF-43. I loved it there!
  • I was only there for 4 months for TACAN school on my way to Pax summer of 83 and boy do I remember those cups of fried chicken livers they had at the on base eatery.
  • I was at Oceana (va-42 and va-35) from 1971-1977 in between deployments on Nimitz and America

Those that speak of MCPO Shepard, Is that Tom Shepard , I believe he was a AE1 when I was there.
