  • David you are correct! However, they did change a few of the color pictures every now and then.

I have looked over my Anchor many times and there were always a few things in there that bothered me! As in this one:

3439420242?profile=originalI know the Navy was taking them young. I was 17 when I went in! But, I didn't know they took them this young then! (Look real close in the center above)

3439420313?profile=originalSince you were there the year before me David, Iam guessing that is you demonstrating how a molder reacts to stepping on something really hot!

3439420124?profile=originalAnother one that always bothered me was one of the pics from the "gas chamber" The guy on the right seems to enjoy it too much! (and the guy behind him).

3439420350?profile=originalAND FINALLY.....Proof that the "don't ask, don't tell"policy was not around back in those days!

  • Chief, I remember a photographer following our company around also.I think when I got my Anchor, there were photos of us and different company's mixed in ours. I thought when he was close to us, I smelled a strong odor of whiskey, it was apparent he was distracted by the "nectar's of the Gods," and lost his way between company's and offered to photograph anything resembling a "company." LOL

  • IDavid, I do not recall a photographer following our company around, alot of those pictures were probably in every Anchor! Would love to compare notes, however, I already donated my Anchor along with a bunch of other stuff to the USS Salem in Quincey, Mass. Still have some stuff left, which will go to the Salem or the town of Truxton in upstate New York.

  • I just finished watching the latest NCIS, has the Navy gone absolutely mad! A third class petty officer wearing colar devices on a khaki shirt! Where is that dividing line between officers/chiefs and enlisteds. My biggest question is will they still have the service dress blues to bury me in or will I be outfitted in some dumb new uniform!

  • The 3 grand is my Navy retirement and SSI put together, I just have to live long enough to get the SSI part. Having a part time job at a golf course is not a bad idea, I could work for green fees. I already have a connection to two courses, the Lakes and the Desert at Primm Valley golf club, I send those people an e mail every morning about expected arrivals coming in on stay then play packages. Plus I work group desk and I support the Sales Department putting together their groups - mostly golf groups. I have a few "connects" at PVGC.

  • Guys, I am not sure retirement was all it was claimed. Spent 35 years in the retail business in management, retired, 1 year later went back part time 5 years later retired again and now working part time again. Have 3 retirements beside SS and make ends meet. Just afraid if I quit, with all my medical problems from Nam, might not get up one morning.

  • Chief Ford.....Believe me, retirement is good, but you will get tired of the boring, do nothing life.  You'll be out there looking for someting to do.  I spent an additional 20 years in law enforcement to boost my retirement.  Now I work Part-time 3 days a week in a golf Pro-shop to support my golf addiction.  Let me know how it works out.  Also, I would be amazed if you drew 3K in SS benefits.

  • Dan I am counting the days, two years and three months and some odd days and I can stay home and watch tv everyday and spoil my cat rotten! Did you get hazardous duty pay while working at the Post Office? Saw news reports of postal workers killing their fellow workers. Now that I think about it, it has been 15 or 20 years since I have heard about something like that. I just can't wait for the day when I can get up when I want and not have to worry about being someplace at a certain time. I just have to live that long!

  • Chief, take it from me. The worst day in retirement is better than the best day working. Of course I'm retired from the Post Office which is just a step above being a POW.

  • I can identify with alot of what has been said in here in the last day or two. On Navybuddies, I found like several people I was stationed with, sent e mails and no response, a couple of others at least said hi and nothing else. Then there was Rick we were stationed at the hospital at Camp Pendleton and then at Pearl, we had an exchange going last September I think and all of a sudden - nothing! Guess what that leads me to believe? I am three months away from 60, 2 years and three months away from social security, I just need to live that long to reap the rewards, last I saw at 62 it would be over 3K a month and that is livable!

Now I will give you dual philosophy on life - every day I wake up breathing is a good day - every day I wake up breathing and I do not have to go to work - is a better day! To go on - everyday away from work is a good day!
