  • I hate to hear the classic dungaree uniform is gone. I lived in dungarees for three

years in kami Seya, Japan.  No inspection s for all that time and great duty also.

Lots to be said for a small base and small command back then. I had been a

Kiddy cruiser and extended a year there as PO2. I understand that the rules

have changed a lot since then , so I don't think it would be as much fun now

if the base were still in operation...We worked hard and played hard, but

now it seems it would be like going to a job in the city...

  • The classic dungaree uniform is gone, now its overalls or that silly blue camo uniform. My biggest gripe on uniform changes is when they authorized the surface warfare sweater for everyone to wear. I busted my hump for 6 months and 15 days to earn that qualification. I could have understood to authorize it for people who held qualifications like SS, AW, AC etc.

  • Chief Ford.

I noticed your comment about the jumper coming back (for women also).

That makes me feel better as  some time back I saw a bunch of sailors

and a wave was in the group in whites (jumper) and white hat and I

thought I was seeing things..ha Lots of changes have happened since

    the early sixties, I guess..

  • I had 2 of those hats I bought at 7 Seas club in 72 or 73. When my mother decided to move a few years later, she lightened the load and those hats went in the trash along with 2 brass 105mm howitzer shells.

I went thru the uniform changes when dungarees were out and that other uniform came in (I think they were called untilities), Then the jumpers went away and we had the salt and peppers (white shirt and black pants) then there was the winter working uniform - black pants, long sleeve black shirt, black tie and a white combo cover (even for enlisted). This was normally referred to as the gestapo uniform. Tbhen there was the dress blues for enlisted only difference between that uniform and officers/chiefs - we had silver buttons. After x amount of years the jumpers came back (and for women too) the only uniform that stayed was the gestapo only now it was worn with a dixie cup. Talk about a strange looking uniform.

  • Gene,  I graduated from NTC in 1967 and just turned 65.  Late 50's would be about 75 and still viable.  Life expectancy for men is about 79 for men and climbing and we had some physical training that hopefully keeps us younger. I think when I look at the Obits the expectation is about 85-89. I think that there may be less interest during the cold war era as opposed to the Viet Nam era so we are just experiencing an anomally.  Health is always a concern as sometimes we can't do anything about some items.  I am a VN war vet and was exposed to Agent Orange thus have Multiple Myeloma but I am going to fight it and stand up for the Navy Vets in a big way. Wish I would have gotten one of those hats.  My father was on a Jeep Carrier in the second world war(Leyte Gulf) and he was issued one.  Lost it when the ship was sunk. Thanks for your service Gene.  Terry

I don't see many recruits from the late fifties...most of us must be gone now.

I noticed a lot of talk about uniforms and such. I received a Donald Duck hat

but was told it was for the East Coast and never wore it in the Pacific.

There have been a lot of changes in the last fifty years...not the Navy I knew.

    That's sad...
