  • RTC June to September '67.  Company 4007 Sec. 2 Bluejackets choir.

  • Hey Pat

I was a tenner drum line. If I recall right 2nd roll? Bass drum  was 3rd roll? Remenber the guy that played the tim tom drums, front roll behind the Drum  Major? I remember that beat. Did you make any parades? So you went to Adak. That was my first duty station, a wonderful place to visit. Spent the rest of my duty at miramar VF-2 F-14s. I was in the crash crew at Adak for all 365 days, so we rolled out when you landed, Had alot of fun there but could'nt wait to leave. Thanks for the follow up and talk to you later.

  • Hiya Greg,

Sounds like we just missed each other or had a small overlap in the Drum and Bugle Corps.

My group left towards the end of March or early April, about the time you would have been arriving in the corps after service week.

What insturment did you play? I was on bass drum because boot camp didn't have a recruit orchestra where I could play string bass.

Do you remember the jungle beat we played while marching? (I still remember how to play it.) It always began on that three drum set and usually every insturment got a chance to come up with a solo. (Even bass drums.)

I recall that the company commander at that time was QMC McLamb.

Somewhere I still have company flag replicas that I bought at the R-4 store.

  • Would love to hear back from Pat Henderson  I believe I was there in the Drum & Bugle corp the same time one of his photos were taken ( photo marked Non Graduation day ) To explain what that means is. You have to extend two weeks in Boot when you join D&B corp so that day is when your rifle company Graduates. You join your Company for Grad then you have to watch as they go home and you have to return to D&B for two more weeks. A bitter sweat day but it was worth it.

  • Thanks for commenting, Mr. Summer. I was also in the Drum and Bugle Corps but in the fall of 1958, Company 4006. At that time we were still using single valve bugles and were billed as the "the only single valve bugle corps in the United States that could play the National Anthem". Don't know if that was true or not but we all told each other it was. Any way, we also played a number of parades around the area but the best one was our invitation to play the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix. As I recall, we flew from Coronado to Williams AFB in Phoenix for the weekend, actually got to stay away from RTC over night. I'm with you Gregory, even though we had to extend our stay in boot camp to be in the Drum and Bugle Corps. I wouldn't have missed for anything, had a fantastic time in what the regular guys called the "Beat and Blow". Buy the way, were they still using one valve bugles in '71?

  • Thanks for commenting, Mr. Summer. You were there almost

exactly one year before me  (3/1/1972, Co. 086). The Drum &

Bugle Corps were always inspiring to listen to :)

  • Feb 28 1971 company 091 CC was Chief Rankin. Actually a pretty good guy. On week 4 I was moved to the Drum and bugel corp after 1week of service of course. Actually the best move I ever made. On week 6 the D&B was invited to play a parade somewhere in San Diego, did'nt matter it met liberty after the parade for us. We had some real talents in D&B like the Recruit that was the director and conductor for the Disney marching band, also the drum major from USC marching band. I remember the first practice section, the chief conductor trying to make something sound good out of with no sucess. A recruit raises his hand and asked ( Sir with all do respect may I try? ) And this guy had this band spit shined in less than hour. We played Disneyland, a few more parades all with libertys. Anyone who grad from boot during this time knows how well the D&B played. Best time of my career in the Navy. Would love to hear from someone who was in the D&B

  • Wow Robert! What a coincidence! I was in Co. 517 too but a few years later..July to September 1969.
  • Company 517 / Sept. - Dec. 1965
