  • Likewise on the distance! If I wasn't on the right coast, I'd be there too! I'm working on trying to help get the real thing sailing again(a real WW2 Destroyer Escort)!

The Neversail is now under the control of the NTC Foundation. They are responsible for maintaining the historical buildings as well. Last year they had a Sea Cadet group repaint her. They are at least trying to keep her looking ship shape! However, all I can find says they want to make a museum out of her. But, to date she is still unused.

When you think of how many of us out here have an attachment to that "vessel", there should be no problem getting enough interested. Even if many only included her on a vacation trip once in a while, there would be plenty of folks there most of the time! So, I think it is more than feasible!

As I said, I am going to call and see what is going on and what we can do!

  • It is history, our history and many others, maybe we can get them to make it a park and museum.  Like I said, if I was still in San Diego, there would be plenty that could be done.  Need to get several groups behind us on this.  Maybe start with a state congressman?

  • Do you think the Navy or the Council members of San Diego, let us make the TDE-1 into a museum, Since the Navy sold the property to a developer. We have to find out if we can save the TDE-1 first. If we can get something going I am all for it.
  • Shame I am not still in San Diego. I used to go there all the time with the VFW and others to throw support for keeping NTC alive.  Now in Hawaii, it is hard to find people I can motivate to move on this.  I remember my time in boot very well, celebrated my 21st birthday there.. Woweee a coke and two hours of marching party...What do you need Jim to get something started.  If I can I will help

  • OK, there are 120 of us in here on RTC! There are 74 more in NTC! There hasn't been much of anything going on here for a year now! So what's the story? I am thinking of starting some kind of campaign on the ol TDE-1. So, WHO'S On BOARD?
  • Went through Oct - Dec 1976. Company 267 (I think) DP1 Hamilton was our company commander. I believe it was his first company. Didn't win any flags, etc. Vivid memories: My teeth were pretty bad then so I made 3 trips to the dentist. We had to double time everywhere when  we were solo. First trip I walked across the grinder just as a senior chief was coming out of one of the barracks. I knew I was screwed...Sure enough he yelled, "Come here nut!" and proceeded to dress me down and  administer a private short tour for what seemed like an hour (more like 10 minutes).  Ok lesson learned...Following week had another dental appt and ran the whole way. There he was AGAIN!. Called me over and told me I was running too fast and we went through the whole thing again but not as long this time. This included a long demonstration of correct double time technique.  Another couple of weeks went by. This time I'm looking for the guy and there he was again. He had to waiting for me or something, I couldn't believe it. He called me over, gave me a once over and said, "Carry on."  Never saw him again but the lesson was burnt in.

  • In the comment by J. Patrick Smith (August 15) he mentions a guy who had a meltdown the first night. We had a couple of guys in 67-583 who flipped out. One started tossing stuff around and we wrapped him in a wet sheet. Not sure if the Co. Cmdr. suggested that or if we did in on our own. The medics (some guys in white coats) came over with a straight jacket and took him away. Never saw him again.
