was there for OSVET trng in 80, really a breeze for prior service grunts,
I remember jack neely the 18 yr veteran who came in as a seaman, with a full chest of medals and hash marks down both arms, along with other green beret / seal ribbons, that was one cool dude, the oldest seaman ever I think there or in the navy as far as comeing in after being gone so long
I was there in September 1982 - October 1982 Company 267. Then I went directly to ATD...
The UCMJ was adopted in '55 ( or was ir '56) at any rate the " laying on of hands" was OFFICIALLY ENDED ( ? ) in '56,but I do remember the CC of our sister Company...639..gently applying his right foot to one of his SKINHEAD'S back-side,which seemd to work, because it kinda speeded him up enough to get him back in step....Talking about working off accumulated demerits....We were NOT allowed to WORK OFF our demerits;they stayed with us for our duration, and if we picked up fifteen demerits, for ANY reason,we were transferred to a Company known as ..800 BAKER...which consisted of misfits, and those who just could not adjust to boot camp life....Life was NOT easy for 800 Baker...
Never fell asleep again!
He was always physically bashing us while verbally abusing us. It was boot camp after all.
After being in the fleet for a few years,I thought it would be kinda nice to get SHORE DUTY back at GL/NTC,and HARRASS the SKINHEADS,and revive the rumor of the 6" SQUARE NEEDLE...remember THAT one?
Frank Farrugia,do you remember which Camp you were in...like Camp Porter,Downes, etc. I was at Camp Porter, barracks 1502,lower east...For some reason,it seems I can remember all this stuff, but just can't remember what I had for breakfast today ha ha You were there before the UCMJ was put in place. If I remember right, your Company ( and others ) were there under the very watchful eye of the " ROCKS and SHOALS" when a CC could LEGALLY put his foot...rather FORCEFULLY ...to the hind-side of the recruits...Then in '55 ( I think ) the UCMJ was adopted, and all that BAD stuff stopped...Or rather, was supposed to...Anyway,I survived it but was ready to get into the fleet and away from GLNTC.
James F. Benson, you seem to have remembered all the gooood stuff. I was there a bit before you. August 1954, Co 143 under the watchful eye of
M.J. Potosk G M 1.
Had a great 6 wks. through a winter doing all those good things.
