  • I was there june 62 to sept 10 clothes stops diddy bags working off demerits pushing the piece in the drill hall in the evening cc saying get down and give 50 lad that was old navy oh yeah getting kicked in the ass when you weren't doing the 16 count manual of arms with a antique M1 it was nasty but looking back it was a character builder that let you know who was in charge USS VULCAN AR5 63-65
  • RTC Great Lakes Jan 71 thru March or April 71. Was RPOC (RCPO?) Company 020 - 1971. CC was BMCS Fred Hutchins, a great guy. It was an experience to say the least. To this day people do not understand tying bedsheets to a clothesline in -20 degrees with a piece of rope called a clothes stop. I still don't get it either.

From GL to SD for RM "A" school, then 2 years at FOCCPAC at the Kunia tunnel on Oahu, HI. Finished on the USS Bainbridge DLGN-25. Enjoyed one Westpac, 2 trips across the equator.

Met some wonderful folks in the Navy.

  • I was in Great Lakes in Sept to December 1971. co. 298... cc cpo Jack Matthews. Fire training school was the best.  Until you screwed up anyway. Then you had a hose down the back of your wet suit and jumped up and down while singing Anchors Away. Never had the pleasure but saw several other guys do it.
