  • Remember the little white ditty bag, Clothes stops for clothes pins, and sitting around stenciling, spit shining boondockers, and once a day (at least 1 we hoped) smoke and coke?
Guys (me included back then) would suck down two to three cigarettes in about 10 minutes! Didn't know how many days it might be before the CC allowed another "smoke and coke". It was always a reward, and we didn't earn too many of them!
  • Jack cameras were a no no back then I have looked on the internet for pics frim that time but didnt have any luck things were quite differnt back then I undestand they are not allowed to kick you in the ass anymore and now have washing machines would not surprise me if they allow cameras and cell phones now back in the day we got paid in cash on the ship now they have ATM machines on the ship I was aboard the Vulcan AR5 63-65
  • Yes Michael, I certainly know what you mean. It's been a long long time for both of us. I noticed "Stick" is in here, and he was stationed there in security after basic I believe. I have spoken some with him about it before but don't recall all the details of his experience in regards to my inquiry. Would like to see some photos of the base and the buildings back then. I am not sure, but I don't think they let us take many photos during basic.

  • Jack glad that helps we were warned about the fire traps in 62 camp Dewey sounds framiliar but it has been 51yrs if you know what I mean I will check my copy of the keel and see if it is mentioned there
  • Oh yes, I remember a Camp Moffet now. I think you are right Michael. Thanks, and I remember those wooden barracks we were in when we first arrived. They were tinder boxes and we were told that they could catch fire very easily and would burn rapidly. We had fire watches as I recall.

Also, I just remembered a Camp Dewey?

  • It was camp porter camp barry was receiving and camp moffet was the wood baracks that we spent time in before going across the road to camp porter thats the way it was in 62 hope this helps
  • Is anyone familiar with the staff training command center at Great Lakes in 1969?

I was a permanent service week and occupied a clerical position there (typing company command manual revisions). It was in a building with a gymnasium and there was a tunnel I went back and forth through each day between the barracks which were concrete (2-3 stories I believe), with clothes lines in a courtyard in the middle. Was it Camp Barry, Porter, or something else?

Please anybody it's driving me nuts trying to remember...
