I was stationed at NAS Alameda from Feb. 1970 to Apr. 1973 I was an Enlisted member of VR-30. I came to VR-30 as a young Airman fresh out of AMS A school NAS Millington Tennessee. Working out of the Airframes shop on swing shift for a year working On C-131 Samaritan, C-1A Traders COD And T-39 Exec Jets sewing on my PO3at this time, then I went to calendar check crew doing scheduled Maintance for the rest of time in VR-30, During this time I sewed on my PO2,. Shipping over Apr. 1973 for AMS B school and order to NAF Signorelli Sicily .
March 1984 - 1989 NAR Training as Instructor then they sent me to AIMD to get rid of me. I was commissioned in 1989 as an LDO.
DID THEY KEEP MARS FLYING BOATS AT NAS ALAMEDA? WHEN I GOT OUT OF BOOT CAMP IN 1950 WAS FLOWN TO MOFFET FIELD, BUSSED TO TI, THEN BUSSED TO ALAMEDA NAS. GOT IN A MARS FLYING BOAT, AS WE TOOK OFF UP THE CHANNEL WATER WAS SQUIRTING IN THE SEAMS AND THE WAVE CREWMAN SAID THEY ALL DO THAT. IT WAS A GREAT FLIGHT TO HAWAII THOUGH.
I was aboard the USS Midway in the late '50s when she was homeported at NAS. Alameda.
I was stationed at Alameda when I was sent to the USS Coral Sea right out of boot. Nice city and had a lot of fun with shipmates and civilians.
I was in the Seabees on the east side of the base. CBU 409/416, from early 1972 to May 1975. My worst week was when a fighter jet crashed into an apartment building on the island. We helped the search for bodies and clean up. When I was on night and weekend duty, I got to shuttle the troops from the EM club to the ships. More than one fight broke out between members of different ships. We also had to help the Marines guard the main gate from Vietnam protesters.
I was stationed at NAS Alameda on temporary duty from October 1956 until February 1957. While at Alameda I worked in the enlisted personnel office. Mr. Madison, a Warrant Officer, was the officer in charge of the personnel office and Chief Kittrell was the chief in the office. After I left Alameda I went to AN"P" school at NATTC Norman, OK and then to NATTC Memphis for AT"A" school. The only other person I remember after all these years was Delores Corbeil, I think was a YN3.
I was sworn in at Alameda-Feb., 17, 1967 by CDR Blalock (?) started drilling with VP872. Boot Camp June 67-Sept 67 in barracks 14. continued drilling as an AN until ordered to avtive duty, Aug 69.
Joined VA-216 in A4-F Skyhawk squadron in March of 1969. Spent my last 6 months in the Navy there at Alameda enjoying all the nightlife around the base at Dale's nightclub just outside the base. Good times and good year 1969 . . . ;-)
