  • @Kaylin B. (Fee) Daniels - I finally got my dad to mail me my copy of The Rudder and I found out about Capt. Kuhn doing a google search. I was very saddened to see that such a pioneering female Sailor and Officer had died such a sad and early death as well.

@Roger L Henderson - I envy your career. I left the Navy to pursue a college degree that isn't doing me much good these days with the economy as it is.

  • I am saddened by the death of Commander Kuhn, I worked at RTC when she was in command. I respected her a great deal as a female commander of RTC she was was a strong female role model.  And i took great pride in serving under her command.

  • From March 'till May 1972 I was there in Co. 071. I will never forget the GRINDER...! John Glen spoke at the graduating ceramonies in May. Got to see one of the Apollo missions lift off.

  • June 1980 - Sept. 1980. Cannot remember my Company number at the moment. I officially retired this past April as a Senior Chief.

  • Our entire company was coming off the grinder and who was walking towards us? Capt. Kuhn!

Every dang imbecile in our company did NOT salute her but me!!! My entire company caught hell but me. No shit. I am dead serious. I can't believe it to this day.

  • Sorry for the huge font mod please make changes if needed.

  • Also to anyone that remembers the CO of RTC Orlando in the 1980's Captain Lucille R. Kuhn died tragically in a car accident in 1995.

Captain Kuhn enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and retired in 1985.

She was the first female director of the officer candidate school in Newport, R.I., the first to command the Combined Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla., and the first to serve as deputy commander of the Navy Recruiting Command."

Her service awards included the Legion of Merit with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star and the National Defense Medal with bronze star.

  • Oh that RTC time was 1 Aug 1980 to 28 Sept 1980 for my TU.

  • @Gerald A. Kaufman wow that's terrible. OK I've been lurking on here for a long time.

I was in Training Unit 3122 aka K122. Our CC's were SK1 Hanson and YN2 Luna. I thought there could never be any meaner women on the planet at that time LOL. We never had any special treatment until Graduation Day when we were the Honor Company. I have never been so proud in my entire life. We had all the flags and everything and marched first. I thought I'd say a little bit more since everyone just says the same old stuff. I loved Orlando and was shipped to NTC to complete my Basic Electricity and Electronics School. Then I was shipped to NTC San Diego for A School. I will always hold a soft spot in my heart for Orlando RTC and NTC. It's where I became a Sailor. Ten years after recruit training I drove to the base and just sat there and looked for awhile. I'm glad I did because it was razed not long after. It never made a lot of sense to me because the base wasn't in operation for that long. But I think that's what makes RTC/NTC Orlando Sailors a special group. Take care Shipmates.
