  • Just to set everyone straight on the food poison episode at RTC Orlando in 1977. The official cause was chicken salad made with chicken that had been thawed, re-frozen, thawed and re-frozen several times. It cost several Mess Specialists as they were called at the time and 2 commissioned officers their careers. After the article 32 hearings were complete, several were courts martialed and subsequently convicted for dereliction of duty. It was not a good weekend for all recruits at the time.

  • Training Unit 3009, November 1977-February 1978.  PO Johns was the CC, I think she was a Photo Mate 2, Seaman Snell was the ACC.

  • Philip G. Morgan---Yes, I remember the big food-poisoning episode in RTC in '77.  I was a corpsman at the main hospital and there was a big recall of off-duty corpsmen to help treat all the sick recruits.  We had to get some meds and IV fluids from civilian hospitals to keep up.
It was traced back to bad mayonnaise in a salad, either a potato salad or a pasta salad.  It was made bad because it wasn't kept cold enough, that is it was allowed to warm to room temperature which allowed bacteria to grow.

  • Started boot camp 25 Oct. 1982 under the able guideance of GMGC Sahm and PC1 Wright in company Co15 Div. 5.  It was a great experince if you don't count the Division sidewalk and the mini mo tour.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.  No matter what branch of service you are in or have been in, boot camp is something that only someone who has been there can understand.  It is the bond that makes us able to handle what life throws at us.
