  • Chief Joseph, great pic of you and your son together! Congrats to him...and may his Navy career sail smooth! I have a similar pic just after my bootcamp PIR in Orlando, I made honor recruit of my company, CO73 April 19, 1990, and this made my dad especially proud.

I had lunch with Adm. Boorda that day, a fine mustang officer...the finest actually. Anyway, my dad is on the left, and he left the Navy in 1958 as a 2nd class ET. He did one 4 year hitch and his remains are forever buried in his Navy blue jumper.
  • Nothing COED but Chapel, and some dinning. It is very different now.
  • Wow, what a great pic! Did Orlando combine the genders at any point? I can't envision running with the men. I could barely run with the women.
  • I had not realized that it was that new when I went through in July 1975. It was operating at 100% I suspect. Company 029 and just a few others were moved to dinning on the "other side" of the chow hall with the females. QUITE A NOVELTY to us! We were not allowed to talk and our hand had to be on the table at all times. I still have clear memories or barracks watch and roving patrol... IT training (only once) and being the Company Guide On... marching (drilling in the dark) before dawn and breakfast because the black flag was out by 0900. It made me very nervous to be the guide on bear in "lightning strike central" and usually when it poured by the time we put our raincoats on we were soaked anyway.

SA Joseph just graduated from RTC Great Lakes on 03 SEP 09. There are somethings that have not changed, but some that are remarkably different and for the better. What rating were you?

  • Chief Joseph, I went through bootcamp in Dec 1973.
  • RTC was one of (if not the best) times in my life. To know that it is no longer there is very sad. Made some great friends and meet some very interesting people. I was one of the last few company there before they closed. I also attended A.T. land across the street.
  • What year was that Mary?... if I me be so bold.
  • I was in one of the very first female bootcamp companies in Orando FL. Boy what a difference bootcamp was back then than it is today.
  • Its sad to see it go...I would have liked to went and visited it...
  • I too was saddened when I learned of the scrapping of RTC, Orlando. I spent some good years there at WS&PT.
