  • Yeah, It"s ashame it was demolished because i would love to be able to go visit it. Lots of memories which seem like a couple of lifetimes ago. I"ll never forget RIF.
  • I was the RCPO of Training Unit 227 May 77 - July 77. It's amazing how quickly the time slips away. I was able to visit RTC a couple of times before it was demolished.
  • I was at RTC ORLANDO Nov.79 - Jan. 80, company 037
  • Deanna Little, sounds like you had a better than average time iun Orlando. Time changes our view point as I posted earlier. I just returned from RTC Great Lakes, IL on Monday night. My son graduated on Thursday the 3rd. I don't know when the Navy started doing things they way they are now. It is very different in some aspects, the biggest being "Battle Stations" and the simulator. I would love to experience this myself. If anything ever made sense in their training it would be this IMHO.

Personal experience - I arrive aboard the USS John F Kennedy immediately following Basic Training and within a few weeks was fighting fires in a collision at sea with the USS Belknap. I was very glad that one of the last things in our training was damage control and firefighting.... still fresh on my mine. My baby sailor said it was a scary evolution, quite realistic.

  • This was my beginning of the Navy, RTC, Orlando, FL. Bootcamp, memories, wow, u got five minutes to eat ur fine Navy Chow, we marched everywhere, and da grinda was a killer, a sang in the choir didn't have to do hell week, yea....If i had a hammer i'd hammer in da morning, i'd hammer in da evening, all over dis land, i'd hammer out danger, i'd hammer out warning, i'd hammer out love between all of brothers, allllll over dis land..an...and, loved my uniform, kerchief, and leggings, da short phone calls, 21 gun salute shot, class was boring, i used to be so sleepy, Excellant experience for me, wouldn't trade it for da world.....
  • Funny how time gives us a different perspective. I have good and funny memories about basic training. I remember MM1 Gordon Wyant pretty well. He gave me a lift from the barracks to NTC for Apprentice Training for another two weeks before going aboard the USS John F Kennedy. I'm very excited because next week 9-2 my wife and I are flying to Milwaukee and driving down to RTC Great Lakes. My son will Pass In Review on 03SEP. I've shaved the 9 year old beard, purchased new white shoes and ribbons and ready to suit up for this special event.
  • I was really saddened by the scrapping of RTC. I shaped peoples lives (because everyone remembers their transition from civilian life) and when they passed in review, I was very proud of them. I trained 9 companies over four years there, and the sweat I dropped on that grinder was worth every drop.
