USS Independence CV/CVA-62

The fifth USS Independence (CV/CVA-62) is a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. It was the fourth and final member of the Forrestal-class of conventional-powered Supercarriers. It entered service in 1959, with much of its early years spent in the Mediterranean Fleet.

I was on board the uss independence from 4/2/82-8/22/85 working in #1 main machinery room as a boiler tech.

Served on Indy Oct 81 to Jun 84. Worked in Deck Dept, 5th Division, Personnel Office and Legal Office. Made 2 Med Cruises 82 & 83

Arrived on the Indy in 1979 WHEN SHE WAS IN THE YARDS IN PORTSMOUTH VA DID ONE IO CRUISE (nov 19,1980-June 10,1981)ONE MED CRUISE AND HAD A LOT OF GOOD TIMES .WORKED IN THE A DIV EA03 STREAM HEAT CAT REPAIR SHOP

Went aboard with HS-5 P/P shop in the spring of '73. Also played lead guitar in the ships rock band "Free Flight". Great times, friends and places and some hard work thrown in.... (beer barge in Crete, Bar hoppin in Athens, doing Sunset Parade gigs with almost every Port o' Call.) The sudden departure that left many a sailor stranded in Athens during the '73 Arab-Israeli War left those of us who where "shorter" than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut a tad worried. 5 weeks later, a "cat-shot" on a COD to Crete then to Rota, Spain then Home. Never forget....I haven't!!

I served during Operation Desert Shield and the change of homeport to Yokosuka - 1990-91. I was the Assistant Comm Officer and served temporarily as Comm Officer.
