USS Coral Sea (CV/CVB/CVA-43), a Midway-class aircraft carrier, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Battle of the Coral Sea. She earned the affectionate nickname "Ageless Warrior" through her long career.

  • As a matter of fact Darrell, 2 buddies and I borrowed his truck one weekend to drive to Waynesboro to go skiing and visit one of their families. Between Charletesville and Waynesboro, we hit an iced over bridge and the truck went out of control. The truck was damaged pretty good. We were scared out of our wits to let him know, but he took it pretty good. Whew... And therefor, I am still alive.

  • Yes Darrell, that was Curtis Price. I just checked my yearbook and I did not see him in there. We hung out a lot together with a airframe/corrosion guy in VA55 - Tim Peyton. Curtiss was a big boy. He did play for Clemson, but blew his knees out. A common mishap for many guys in the college football scene. They are abused by the schools and really get the screwing of their life while the schools make all the money. Honestly, we had it better than they have it today. Sorry to rant about that. But "Tiny' was a really great guy to hang around with. We definitely were an odd pair standing together.  It is funny that you ask about him, I have been in contact with Tim Peyton quite many times over the last few years and we were recently talking about him. It would be great to hear how he is doing.

  • duan kustra i believe he was a air framer

  • i was attached the  coral sea from 1985-1990  in  va-55 the war horses. if any one has photos of va 55's a6's i would be thankful if you would share them..  i also have to say the ageless warrior  should of  had  a better fait than how she ended up.

  • I joined on Coral Sea with VA-55 for the cruise when we struck Khadafi. I flew into Naples for the first port visit right out of VA-42 FRAMP. I also made the 87/88 Hollywood cruise. What an experience that was. Something like 40 days at sea. I loved that boat, we wanted to keep her going. My sea tour was up and I really wish I could have made the decom of her.

  • I was with VA-55 and served on the Coral Sea from '84-'87.  My very 1st tour, straight out of "A" school.  Was onboard for the collision in the Carribean and the 3 carrier battle group, (Coral Sea, America, and Saratoga)  conflict with Libya's "Line of Death".
  • I learned how to make liquid oxygen in '68 and sent to the Coral Maru in February '69. I spent 2 1/2 years in #2 Engine Room (so much for my O2 training). I finished the cruise she was on then, going to Sidney before coming home. I made another WesPac on her before transferring in May of '71. I learned a lot down in that Engine Room.

Coral Sea

My tour of duty on the Coral Sea began in Nov. 1986 and ended in Nov.1988. I was originally assigned to the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department as the Leading Chief. I enjoyed the job, worked with some great Officers, Chiefs and Sailors. The boss was a Cdr Mason. Made Master Chief in May of 1989 and made the error of complaining to the XO, Capt Denny Mc Ginn about the HT's not fixing a leaking urinal drain. He asked me if I knew how to solve the problem. I said" XO, you only have to…

Looking for shipmates

Hi, I was abord Coral Sea from Feb. 1951 through Apr. 1954. I'm not sure of exact dates, I'm not sure of anything at my advanced age. I think I enjoyed my time aboard the Coral Maru. I made some great friends, most of whom were in the V3G (Av. gas gang) division. I've had the good fortune to remain in contact with a few of my shipmates but, would sure like to hear from any others.
