The mission of the USS John F Kennedy Project is to preserve and interpret their principal artifact, the super carrier USS John F Kennedy in order to educate and entertain the public while serving as a constant reminder to future generations of the sacrifices of those who have gone before. I'm working with the next generation aircraft carrier. The first in the class (CVN 78) will be the USS Gerald R. Ford. What may surprise many of you, and certainly surprised me, is that CVN 79 will be named USS John F. Kennedy. I personally prefer names such as 'Enterprise', 'Constellation', 'America', and 'United States', but they didn't ask me what I thought. <s>

I did my first I O cruise on this ship and Capt. Cargill was CO, Capt Daugherty was XO. I was a Corpsman in the Medical Depatment and on the Flight Deck

As I remember, the ship was always referred to as 'Big John' until then-Captain Tuttle took command and started referring to it as 'Super K'. When I went back aboard in 1981 it was referred to as 'Big John' again.

I served under Capt. Mitchell, Capt. Tuttle and we received a new CO just before I left but I don't remember his name.

I was onboard the "Super K" 75-79 for the first part of my tour I was in Medical, and the last year I was a Command Counselor. I also remember the Belnap and the Bordelon collisions.

was aboard the Kennedy with VS-32 76-77 and 80-81. Was good times. Got to see a lot of the world.

Served aboard "BIG JOHN" from 80-84 in Air Dept./ V-4 Division. One hell of a ride from start to finish! ABF2 Donald worked the flight dk, below dks, flt dk repair and fuels coord in flt dk ctrl.

I did four deployments on Big John, 75-76, 77, 82, and 83-84. I was TAD from Vf-14 on the first two, VF-11 on the third, and worked in VF-11 IWT shop on the fourth. Al Brannon, I'm pretty sure we were in the same shop im IM-3 Division, W/C 690. I also remember the Belknap collision right after the evening prayer and staying up all night at GQ. They relaxed Zebra the next morning about 0700 for battle messing. We had some guys bring ham and bread back from the mess decks. They secured from GQ about 1000, and about 1100 about half our shop was in the head trying to figure out which end should go over the toilet first. It seems the ham was bad and we got food poisoning. That was a very unpleasant ending to an unpleasant day and night. Only one guy on JFK was killed, and he was a YN2 from my squadron who had 20 days left in the Navy. He got turned around trying to get away from Admin/Pers and smoke got him. Sometimes there just isn't any justice.....

ANYONE ELSE THERE?

22NOV1975 flight ops off the coast NW coast of Sicily. It is just a few minutes past 2200 we have just heard the evening prayer from the Chaplain, and the collision alarm starts sounding. The USS John F Kennedy suddenly rocks sharply to the starboard side. The GQ alarm is sounding. I am 18 yrs. old and aboard my first ship for just 3 weeks. My GQ station is REPAIR 3, the after mess-decks. "Time Plus 4, set ZEBRA". Somehow the USS Belknap CTG-26 has collided with us. Many lives were lost that…
