USS L. Y. Spear (AS-36) was the lead ship of her class of submarine tenders, in service to the United States Navy from 1970 through 1996. She was named for Lawrence York Spear, a former Navy lieutenant who played an integral role in submarine design at Electric Boat Company before and during World War II.

  • USS LY SPEAR 2012 REUNION:
    Dates: September 5-9, 2012
    Location: Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel

After months of working to secure a suitable hotel for our New England reunion, we are pleased to announce that a contract has been signed! This marks the first reunion that the Association will host itself, and it will be held at the Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel in Warwick, RI, (http://www.sheratonprovidenceairport.com/). More detailed information is on the official USS L. Y. SPEAR (AS-36) Association page (click "Reunions") at www.usslyspear.org .

Requests for proposals were sent out all over the New England area, including Connecticut and Rhode Island. Although our target location was New London, we were not able to get a hotel in that immediate area that could either accommodate our group (too small, no banquet facilities, no elevators, etc.) or give us a room rate of under $100.

This year's reunion will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Christening of the USS L. Y. SPEAR in Quincy, MA. We choose the Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel because of its proximity to all the places we want to visit during the reunion, as well as it being close to the airport. One full day will be spent in New London visiting the Naval Submarine Base, and the Submarine Force Museum & USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571). More great events are planned that will be announced when registration forms become available.

Contact the hotel directly to make your reservations and tell them you are with the USS L. Y. SPEAR Reunion group. Hotel reservations must be made by AUGUST 4th in order to get the negotiated room rate. After that date, you may not get that rate or a room. There are only a limited number of rooms reserved at this special price, so please make your reservations as soon as possible. Your credit card WILL NOT be charged until AFTER you check-in, and you can cancel your reservation without penalty up to 24 hours prior to the first night's stay.
  • I was aboard at Norfolk around 1981. Anyone else? Looking for a red head wave named Gail Araujo (before she got married).
  • We gotta get you to a reunion to tell the stories of shutting her down. Iwas just the opposite end of the spectrum. When we walked into the space that was to become the SUBSAT office it was an empty storeroom and we had to convert it. That was one of the offices that weren't finished before she got to Portsmouth. Shoot me your email address and I'll sign you up on our free members only site so you can see if there are shipmates there that you might know and see all the photos from where she went during her lifetime. In 2010 we are trying to arrange a trip to the shipyard to see her one more time. She is scheduled to be scrapped, but no one has a time table yet. The shipyard said they would allow us pierside for photos. Can't get on board... too many safety hazards.
