Spartanburg County was the 15th ship of the twenty ship Newport Tank Landing Ship class, which replaced the traditional bow door design LST. Two derrick arms support a thirty-ton, 112-ft bow ramp for the unloading of tanks and other vehicles ashore.

  • Dang, I hate to see the "Sparkle C" go out like that. She was a great ship with a lot of fond memories for me. She was my final and favorite ship.
  • For those that did not know...the ship has been lost in a fire. Bummer.

  • Hi Everyone. What a BLAST - The power of the internet, right? Wow. I remember you guys although you probably don't remember me. I am sure you remember some of my antics such as knocking out ships power doing PMS on the stern gate, catching the derrick arm on fire during refueling (a teeny fire) and cuttin' up in the pilot house while on watch. - '89-'93 on the ole sparkle 'C'

    Good times - Good times
  • Hey Doug,

After I left active duty in 89' & started college, I kind of lost touch with most of my shipmates with the exception of EM2 Lonny Mallery and RM3 TomTerry. I've kept in touch with them from day one. Lonny's out west near LakeTahoe and Tom-T is out near Springfield Mass. Within the last year I've reconnected with some other shipmates through military.com including: EM2 Edens, RM2 Pepin, EM3 "Tupelo" Russell
What year did the ole' 1192 decommission and were you still there when she was "done"??
  • Hey Doug,
I notice on my commands that the pic of the Spartanburg is not the Spartanburg.
  • Hey Don,
Glad to see on on the site. Perhaps we can get other Sparkle City citizens to join.
  • "Trying to get the band back together" the Penguin needs help
