In March 1943 he completed his college requirements at Athens State College in Athens, AL and left for Midshipmens School at Columbia University. When the college graduation was held, he could not return to Alabama. The war was spent on the LST 227 in the Pacific. He participated in the summer graduation exercises August 23, 2008 at Athens State University. He wore a cap and gown and received his original diploma 65 years late.
