1971 on Westpac I made my first visit to Hong Kong. It was quite different than P.I. or Taiwan or Singapore. There were a lot more signs in English and lot of round eyed women which is something I haven't seen for several months. It makes me a bit homesick. We are enjoying our liberty and there is a lot of fun things to do. We are scheduled for a four day stay but while I was still in town I got the word that all USS Vancouver sailors were to report back to the ship immediately. The ship is anchored in the harbor and there is a Typhoon headed this direction. We'll try to navigate around the edge of the storm as much as possible. The next few days we are caught in some rough seas and heavy swells. The weather decks are closed to unauthorized persons The ship was rolling past 30 degrees regularly. On the mess decks we had some shitcans from the scullery came loose from their chains and took a walk down the passageway, while the upright piano broke loose and took out several tables on the mess decks. We all made it and were better men because of it.
