  • Hello Thomas, I am sure our paths have crossed on the big John. I was on board from 1975 to Aug. 1977. I slept in Med. berth and worked in Dental. I was a Boatswain mate 3rd but transferred to dental as a striker. There was the ships surgeon, tall from Atlanta and I believe he smoked a pipe. Even though he did a surgery on me,  I cant remember his name. Your pic looks very familiar, but it has been some time.

  • ya, the thing that gets my goat is a little more than a year ago I got back from 3 YEARS in Iraq. Of course that doesn't count for VFW membership because as a civilian I didn't get a campaign medal. And even though I was a fobbet, I took fire, responded to calls during rocket and mortar attacks ate the same food and slept in the same quarters as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. Oh well. hey at least I was very well paid.

Doc Young was on the Big O, during 'Nam. So I have no idea what his Rate may have been.

I see you were on the USS Oriskany. Do you ever remember service with a Richard Young? He was also a Corpsman, but I don't know what his dates of service would have been. He was average height, dark complexion, looked very Mediterranean actually. When I met him he was CPO and I got to work for him at Charleston. Great guy, taught me a lot of Navy stuff. He used to talk about the Big O a lot. He really liked it there.
