Was onboard USS BOSTON CAG-1, in 1957. After NATO cruise in the North Atlantic as a Seaman, I was told that I could not attend Guided Missile school because one you left the ship to class A, they would never get you back. Being stuck in the deck crew I applied for Log Room Yeoman, with success. Advanced to 3rd.Class YN. Later took test for 2nd.Class and was told if I "Shipped Over" I would be promoted....if not, I was stuck at YN3. Left Navy, joined Ready Reserves in Galveston,Texas. Served onboard USS WREN,DD568. Was only yeoman in Log Room and was also in ships office with two other guys when we were recalled to active duty during Cuban/Berlin Crisis in 1961.
Can't complain at all. On both ships I worked my job all day as well as either in engine room or on bridge, during getting underway, coming into port as well as refueling and high line details. Sure beat being stuck chipping paint, painting, swabbing decks with little or no advancement to anything. Ships in the 1950-s and 1960-s sure didn't like to send guys off to Class A school.
