"Hi Stanley, don't know if you remember me, I was a radioman on the USS Kawishiwi AO146, 1967=1968, If my memory is correct you were on deck force, came up to the radio shack and inquired about the craft. Glad to see you had a great career and did…"
Thanks for the come back Robert... Yes I loved all the Japanese ports. Kami Seya is about 12-15 miles north of Yokohama, so I spent most of two years going down there We were about 6-8 miles south of Atsugi air base. I loved Japan and extended a year there before getting out. I tried to extend another year to see if I could make RM1 befoe shipping over, but the new CO wouldn't have it....He told me I was Navy through and through and would be back in in ninety
days. Well, that didn't happen..I worked for a year and a half and went to College in Commerce, Texas. Having been military, I didn;'t have to take PE, but had to get signed off with the Athletic director. He was a Comander at the reserve base in Paris Texas. My last semester he asked
me again what I did in the navy what kind of duty did i have. When I told him Radio ship and shore duty he told me if I joined the reserves in Paris he would get me OCS and promote me to comm officer when I got out. I was really thinking about doing that but my wife at the time took a job in Baytown and we moved down there soon to get a divorce and I never persued the opportunity. Often wish I had as I loved the Navy life and what I was doing. .
Robert Always good to see another RM on here. I served on the McKean DDR 784 and then did two years in Kami Seya, japan at the Naval radio receiv er site..Great duty I grew up around Dallas but not familiar with your home town. Thought I had been almost all over Texas at one time or another. I now have been in Miss. for about twenty years...wife grew up here...
