"That does sound like Lt McCoy. Great photo, and great story. Thanks, Mofo! McCoy was a great guy to work for/with. Have you ever written any memoirs of that experience? I had one published in Silent Defenders some years ago. "
"Ahh, the old Mofo indeed! Nice to hear from you. Since you signed my DD214, I see your name periodically.
You do, in fact, remember my role well, which also included replacing Combat Chris's Air Control lead. I'm in South Jersey. It would be…"
"Very few of us went ashore, and it was only in North Vietnam, and only on the coast, and only twice. I'm confident in saying there was no AO exposure to the End Sweep personnel. It would help to know where your spouse was during End Sweep (what…"
"Wow, a voice from the past from one of my favorite people! Pleased and not surprised you made Captain!! I think the VSM problem relates the crew on the support ships.
I still remember you recruiting me for teaching AMCM to the Iranians in Tehran.…"
"Jim, sorry to say found an obit from Ray Schuman.
Raymond Clyde "Ray" Schumann, Jr., 70, of Waco, passed away Wednesday January 6, 2016. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 pm Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.,…"
"Hi Stu! Good to hear from you. Bruce Griffiths, Dave Smith, and I get together, and we connected with Roy McCarthy in NYC last year. You look good for an old guy, which of course we all are.
There was a problem that most of the ships with us…"
"Welcome aboard! I was part of Mobile Mine Countermeasures Command (MOMCOM), also based in Charleston. I have wondered why some of us got the Vietnam Service award but those on the support ships mostly did not. "
"I wrote my congressman:
Representative LoBiondo:
I urge you to support section 566 of HR2810. I am a veteran of Operation End Sweep. This operation cleared the mines the US laid in a number of North Vietnamese ports. It has come to my attention that…"
"Mark, you beat me to the punch. I pulled out my DD214 and sure enough, I have the VSM listed. It did not list the additional bronze star, but the medal I have has it. I agree those who participated in End Sweep should have it. It may be related to…"
"Michael, I reached out to my congressman and he could not find a record of this in their electronic system. My congressman is Frank Lobiondo (R-NJ). He is very supportive of veterans in his district. Can you provide any contact information for Mr.…"
"Brad,
I have a copy of "Operation End Sweep", written by Tensor Industries at the direction of the Mine Warfare Office of NavSeaSysCom. It deals almost exclusively with mine sweeping operations. Tripoli is mentioned twice, once when she took part in…"
Mike ... I think I just accidentally posted my last response on the main chat room and don't see a way to retrieve it ... hope I don't get banned for being unqualified to use a computer ... gotta run ... all the best to you if we don't manage to pull off that get-together ... Jim
Mike, so sorry to hear that ... he was a special guy ... nice to see that he stayed in the Navy and that he made Master Chief ... would have liked to run into him in that capacity, OSCM, imagine that ... let's stay in touch and look for an opportunity down the road to get together ... Jim
P.S. Sorry I got his name wrong ... I respected him a lot ... I guess that's what happens when you're in your 70's ... also don't walk all that great either
Hey, Mike ... I'd forgotten that we almost did that Iranian thing ... I live in Everett, WA and still work in mine warfare as a consultant to the Navy and Defense Industry ... 25 of my 30 years were in mine warfare including Operation Earnest Will, Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and my last tour as Deputy and Chief of Staff @ COMINEWARCOM in Corpus Christi ... that all set me up for what I do now ... I should hang it up soon, but can't seem to let it go ... sounds like you're doing well ... what can you tell me about Schumer? ... b/r Jim
Mike Ayers … are you still around? … the way some guys are talking as if they were not eligible for VSM … that's not how I read the eligibility criteria … you may remember me as "LT" … would be good to hear from you … b/r James (Jim) M. McCoy, CAPT USN (Ret)
Hi Mike. It has been a long while since we were with COMOMCOM. For those who did not receive the VSM was probably a mistake of the personnel office on board the support ships when the dd214 was filled out. I am adjutant with the American Legion and see a few dd214s that don't have it indicated but should have been. Let's keep in touch. I live in New Hamshire now.
