"Just checking in.... I wonder if any of you also found your files were lost. I've never received my benefits do to a supposed fire in the mail files center. Am I really the only service member to have received no benefits?
its pretty frustrating. I…"
"I was in Newport from 60-64. There was a Means in the optical dept which was in the supply building. I think he was a 3rd class. Are you possibly the same person?"
"Hello John,
I worked officers ward, P-13 (night duty), had drivers license so pulled duty Ambulance and food carts, worked ER and dirty surgery as well as paternity. We were left short handed when the Cuban Crisis took place consequently every…"
"I served from 1960-1964 at Newport. When I retired at 65, I found out my service records were supposedly lost in a fire at the facility in Indianapolis. Therefore I have never received military benefits of any kind including social security or…"
"Although I would like to have gotten money, that's not really my issue. Now at 73, health is a very big issue. As I have no proof other than a graduation photo and some boot camp photos, I'm not eligible for veterans administration help. Apparently…"
"If you had social security withheld from your wages in the Navy, social security office should have a record of those payments made to them. You don't need to get anything from the Navy. I'm not sure, but I don't think that they witheld any money…"
"It's great to see some people are still cookin. It sure was a long time ago. I was in from ages 17-21, and thought I knew it all. Now at 72 I learn something new every day."
"social security should show it I believe, a few years ago they sent me a form showing deductions all the way back to 1953 when I was working as a kennel boy.
It showed the yearly deductions I think until I turned 65"
"Nice to hear from you. There are a few Lochhausen. Let me know eventually which you will be visiting.
I am 20 minutes from the center of Munich in the town of Unterhaching (82008)
Maybe we can split a beer.
John"
"There was Chief Leonard and Chief St. Pierre when I was there.
I visited Newport a few years back and it has morphed completely.
It was the centre of my world for almost three years."
"I was there from May 1960 to Jan 1964. Cuban Crisis period. The last two years I worked supply. Worked emergency, pediatrics, psyciatric, officers ward, the eye clinc and dirty surgery. Learned a lot."
my home email is fmf6667doc@gmail.com. The mail is sent as Li'l Bamboo a nickname I got from the Vietnamese people while performing Civic Action Duties in the first part of my tour. The Corpsman that I went there with had already the nickname Bamboo and I was shorter, we were both skinny so they called me Li'l Bamboo.
ANGLICO Marines tried calling me Butcher but it didn't stick. I got that name one night while we were getting pretty plastered. One Marine got hit in the eyebrow with a beer can and that bled pretty good. I was drunk enough to tell him I'd sew it up and he was drunk enough he went along. Best plastic job I ever did, didn't even leave a scar, okay maybe a little one.
The Lochhausen I usually visit is about 20 minutes east? by train near Langweid-Puchhiem, I think the S-4. I stay at Landwirtschaft Deutsche Eiche.
How did you end up in Germany and how long have you been there? I was hoping to eventually retire there but I don't think that will happen unless I win the BIG Loto.
I've got sort of a plan, but my son won't tell me when he has time off so I can't do anything until he does. He's always late. I just can't seem to convince him that it is best to do things early.
I'm into taking photos. I want to be there for the Spring Festivals. I like the costumes. I'm thinking of checking out Franken Schweiz, never been there. I have a foto friend that says it is one of her favorite places. She lives in Jena. I'm planning on being in Bacharach for a week. I was there once before and missed out on visiting Pfalzgrafenstein so I want to go back and take some photos there. The place I stay is a bit out of the way but the landlady is nice. Fewo-Kachel. I'm also hoping to get to visit Murnau am Staffelsee this time and maybe Rosenheim just for fun.
I think if my son is along we'll rent a car to visit some places. I have the beginnings of Macular Degeneration and night blindness so I typically don't like to drive in places not familiar to me if it is dark. One of the woman's sons lives in Harburg by Donnau Ries. I'm thinking that's where we'll rent the car for a couple weeks from there. I stayed two weeks in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 2010, I was in Germany nearly three months. I was hoping to practice my German but my sister came along and she doesn't speak German so everyone spoke to us in English. So now the kids speak to me in German or Boarish which isn't often but better than nothing. I get most of my German practice by watching German TV on line mostly krimmi's.
This is me when I returned to Germany in 1982. I can't wear the pants anymore. lol.
We can definitely get together for a beer. I can sort of figure out my way around Munich. At least I know where the Huggendubel Book stores are and I know the way to the Hofbrauhaus. I also know where the Calumet Photo store is. It takes me a bit but I can usually find my way to the Deutsche Museum.
I'll let you know when I get everything organized and tell you when I'll be there and when.
The rank of HA Hospitalman Apprentice was E-2. If you were striking for a rating and you were an E-2 you were an Apprentice of that rating. However you could be a PO3 and just beginning Hospital Corps School you were technically an apprentice but you were still a Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class.
So you live in Bavaria? Where about? As a kid I lived in Gilching, west of Muenchen. I was born in the States but 4 months old when we arrived in Germany and around 5 when we left due to the difficulty with the Wall. My uncle was in the OSS and used my father's name as his operative name. The Russians were looking for my father.
I am planning a visit early in 2014 to Bavaria. I'll be a little while in Locchausen. I visit the lady that took care of me when I was a kid. I struggle with the German language and am absolutely lost in Boarisch.

Not me. I worked dirty surgery, ER, and then P-13 (NP). Transferred to NP School at USNH Philadelphia in February 1961. Where did you work at Newport?
