Jack,
You said you played softball on Guam. Do you remember Dave Quick or Don Conduff?
Dave played shortstop and Don played second base for the NCS team in '68 '69.
I will be seeing Dave this weekend and just talked to Don this morning.
Jack,
I was at NCS Guam from Dec '67 to Jun '69. Sorry, I don't remember you. Where did you work? What was your rate? I worked at the message center.
Just noticed here that "Ron Starkey and Jack Bierman are now friends". I could have sworn that happened years ago.
Great to hear from you. I've actually looked you up several times over the years but never had any luck until I stumbled across this site a few days ago. And I get thanked for my friendship way back when, eh? Funny, but I always thought I was getting the best end of that deal. One of my best friends ever? Yep. No doubt.
I've regaled my boys with "Jack Bierman" stories many times over the years. They especially like the one about the letter you sent me to fill in the multiple choice selections and mail back to you. (Yeah, I know, I never did that one either. Sorry, but I was a terrible writer at the time.) On that subject, I will say I've improved. I've even written a couple of novels, one of which was published a few years back. See? Things change.
Speaking of changes, there've been a few since we last spoke. Here's a little catch up.
Got out of the Nav in Nov, '71 (without getting court martialed even once (but it was close)) and returned to Houston. That lasted about 7 months, and Robbie and I went back to Guam (I did love the place, if you will remember). We lasted another 3 years or so but decided to try things on our own. I remarried a couple of years later to a lovely Vietnamese lady and lived in Guam until 1979 (left 10 years to the day after getting there). We've got four boys now (Terry (from my marriage to Robbie), Lani from her previous marriage, and our two- Tony and Aaron.) Robbie passed away about a dozen years ago in Hawaii. She'd remarried but was a widow at the time of her death.
I eventually stumbled out of tech-doings and fell into the computer world. Been making a living as an independent consultant/contractor for the past 30+ years. One day I may even retire.
That's my story. What's yours? How'd you get to Florida? Retired? Linda?
Could this be the Jack Bierman of "nubs" fame, loser of cameras, stomper of boonies and writer of letters that some jerks never reply to?
If so, it would be good to hear from you.
