"Thanks for your email to me and for the info on your service background and experience over there. Thepool may not have been there at the time you were (it was at the end of the basebehind the barracks and near the bowling alley). I used to visit…"
"Morgan - glad the base is still intact. What I had read indicated that there were plans to demolish and build a large hotel - not that it had happened as yet. I found these images of the old base pool and it looked to me like they had already…"
"I was stationed at AFSOUTH from Mar '75 - Oct'78. Worked in the Plans & Policies Div. When my rotation came up I was able to get my assignment extended so I did not have to be re-assigned to another base. Had my own apt near Lago di Lucrino and a…"
Ian, thanks for the photos. When I was assigned to the Navy Exchange, my only reasons to go on the AFSouth base was to visit our satellite retail store (in Building L, as I recall) and/or the NATO officers' club. I was also dating a daughter of the U.S. Army Major General who was the chief-of-staff to the 4 star U.S. Navy Admiral Rivera (or Rivero) in charge of AFSouth. I was a 23 year old Ltjg and she was a year or two younger than I and was working as a secretary at the Navy Exchange. I visited her father once at his office on the AFSouth base. I do not remember there being a pool on that base when I was stationed at NSA Naples. The old Navy Exchange building where I works is now vacant and nothing but a derelict structure, as other but not all of the buildings that made up the NSA base. As I understand that area experienced major damage from an earthquake back in 1980 or 1981. Did you ever go to the the Biuebird Club, the Navy enlistedmen's club in downtown Naples near the port? That club was run by the Navy Exchange and supervision of it was part of my job. It is my understanding that there was a terror attack bombing of that club in the early 80s in which over 20 servicemen were killed.
