  • Glad to be aboard Dave. My time of active duty was 8/61-8/64 at LITTLE CREEK AMPHIBIOUS BASE,VA. At the time of my discharge I was HM-3. A very long time ago.I never was aboard ship until I went on a TIGER CRUISE in 1988 aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN-71,my son's duty station. He put in 20 years.

  • Thank you for the warm welcome and Happy New Year! I don't really have any major stories that I can think of. I went to basic training in Orlando in March 1981 and then on to A school for Dental. I put in for ship duty with the hopes I could go on a westpac but received orders to Long Beach California. One of my classmates was going through a very nasty divorce and asked if anyone would swap (we were allowed to do this one time). I was angry that I didn't get a ship so I swapped for Portsmouth VA. My family was on the east coast so I figured I'd take advantage of being closer to them. I got out of the Navy in 1985 but missed it terribly so I joined the reserves in 1987. I was stationed out of Pensacola Florida until 1988. I relocated to Brunswick ME branch and stayed until 1990 when I transferred into the Massachusetts Army National Guard. I made this difficult choice ( loved my unit!) because I started nursing school and the Guard paid 100% tuition. My favorite TDY in the reserves was in Okinawa Japan. I wish I could've been stationed there on active duty. What a great place!

  • Thanks for the welcome, David. I first experienced Olongapo in 199!

  • David,  I was there from August 1969 until VA-44 was decommissioned in 1970. My best memory there was playing on the base football team with Chief Jackson.  We went on to the 6th fleet east coast championship and was defeated by the Navy Seal team.  What a ride that was.

Thanks, and thank you for your service also.

  • Thanks for the welcome. I've got some great pics I'd like to add of the ship and her crew. Will add soon.

  • Thanks for the welcome, David. I need to get my profile squared away, and might have to do it over a few days time. I'm happy to be a part of this with all of y'all.

  • David, I am also a member of Hull.com. Under that web site I can see various info about the Anchorage's history. I am trying to find out how to get ahold of shipmates that may have info about our trip to Anchorage, AK back in 70 or 71. I happened to be in Anchorage a couple years ago and I visited their historical society and was asking about our visit, they said they had no record of our visit only the newest USS Anchorage a few years back.

Is there anything you can do?

  • Mess cooking was a blast. Met some of my best friends ever there. We ate well without having to stand in line for hours. Good in-port liberty.

  • Thank you for the welcome

  • Thanks David .  Looks like some good stories in there. I'll have to look so more tomorrow when I'm not so tired. Been a long day.
