  • I did bootcamp and AT school in Orlando FL December 92-March 93. Reported to the USS Guadalcanal LPH7 April 1st 93. Went on a 6 Med cruise I think in August 93. We got sent to Smalia in October via the Suez Canal, Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and into the Arabian sea. We floated off the coast of Africa for a little more than a month. We got permission to leave our station temporarily to cross the equator so we could become Shellbacks. Eventually we decommissioned her in Norfolk VA in August of 94. Got set to the USS Connolly DD979 from there. Had so.e medical problems and got processed out in May of 95.

  • And thanks for the welcome! • I guess the one that stands out the most is while aboard the USS Aubrey Fitch FFG-34 while on our way home from ASW training we were just off the coast of Florida, by Cape Canaveral when the Shuttle Challenger was lost. We stuck around for about a week or so picking up debris, in all we recovered almost 2 tons of it. A few months later just before leaving for our Middle East Force deployment we received word that the Commandant of the Coast Guard authorized all crew members that were on the ship during the recovery operation to wear the US Coast Guard Unit Commendation with Operational Device.

  • Thanks David, Happy Veterans Day.

  • When I first got to OLF Middleton we had a old Dodge Power Wagon with Light water and PKP and when it went down maint would drive a MB 5 up and a flatbed tractor trailer to take the Dodge back, which seemed to happen often, LOL. Later we got a big F series Ford 16' flatbed 4x4 with a AFFF unit on it and PKP. This id the one I drove through the woods to get to the crash site. Wrecked the truck, got put on report for destroying Government Property and later a Letter of Commendation. I still got to the aircraft right behind the starboard wing, well what was left of it, with two crewman, one fell off rolling out of the setup spot. I remember it like it was yesterday. The T-28 was an amazing airplane I wish I was a pilot and able to afford a surplus, or at least get another ride.

  • There were six of us the senior Petty Officer was a 1st class, the runway crew consisted of four and one in the crash shack, and I do mean crash shack. Two runways four approaches 28/10 and 1/19.  All of us were married, lifers loved it, I wanted to be on a boat, actually it was good duty for married sailors. Daily routine man the runway when the T-28's started flying three squadrons out of Whiting. Lot of touch and goes. Routine emergencies, sump lights, electrical failures, one crash while I was there, T-28 in the trees, prop governor failure, all souls rescued, I was senior PO that day and drove the crash truck, never forget it.  More later, good to be here thanks

  • Looks like you had some good duty stations, after Lakehurst all my requests were probably shit canned, no 7th Fleet, no CVA, LPH, etc- NAS Whiting Field  Milton Florida then OLF Middleton Field Evergreen,  Alabama. Six petty officers 65 miles from the NAS, not even USN. I had plenty of time to study so made 2nd Class in record time. Good to hear from another air boatswain.
