  • Being that his ship transported the defoliant to Viet Nam and he was on damage control if any of the containers leaked, his exposure was more than if it came on the air.  You are very lucky to not have any problems.  My husband had type 2 diabetes, COPD, kidney failure and he lost both legs below the knee.  I am continuing the battle with the VA.  They say that he was not there nor was his ship.  We have deck logs and ships logs and his DD-214 that all disagree with their finding.  The hearing was last Friday and now we have to wait two to three months for their decision.  If yes then on to the compensation hearing, if no to the Court of Appeals VA and if maybe provide what they say they do not have.  That is why I would like to connect with any sailor that had been on the USS Great Sitkin in 1968 when it was in Viet Nam.  Thank you for welcoming me and I will not give up.

  • My husband's name was Bruce C Kiefer.  Most of the men on his ship called him Keef.  I would like to reach out other veterans of the Great Sitkin while she was in Viet Nam.  We are fighting with the VA to get him recognized as having been exposed to Agent Orange.  If anyone knew him and knew that they transported Agent Orange to VietNam please reach out to me.

    Thank you

  • My husband was a machinist mate on the Sitkin from 1967 to 1969.  He made a West Pac cruise and a Med cruise during that time.  I was an ET but never finished school as I married my sailor and got pregnant right away. Back then you were discharged for that.  I was stationed at Bainbridge, MD for boot camp and Great Lakes for school.  This was during a time when there were only two WAVES in the ET classes and we took a lot of ribbing.  Being from CA I spent the winter of 1967-68 with a constant cold or walking pneumonia. Wasn't used to the snow.  Back then if you were going to dinner at the mess hall, dress uniform was required and this was before panty hose.  Skirts were required.  The Navy has really changed since I was there but I did enjoy my short time in the Navy

  • Thank you.
