One of the best memorials to those that served and sacrificed before us is to preserve one of their last remaining ships. That effort has been realized and is proudly demonstrated on the USS Slater, DE-766 in Albany, NY!
It is also a great way for those of us that wish we were back in uniform to realize that dream in a way by becoming a volunteer crew member and finishing the job that was started by the "greatest generation"!
Not only has the Slater been restored to WW2 condition and been made "ship shape"! Unlike most museum ships, her guns are still working! The next goal is to have her hull maintenance done and then get her main GM engines running again! Could it be a sign? The new CEO of General Motors(Dan Akerson) is a Navy vet (70-75) that served aboard a destroyer! If any one knows how to get his ear or attention...please let me know!
