Shellback Initiation Oct. 1944

According to my fathers WWII journal: "Mon, Oct. 9, 1944. Passed the equator. Went through the initiation to become a shell-back. Shall always remember it". He was aboard the USS. South Dakota. Does anyone have anymore information about what that initiation was like or might have entailed??~
