I am wondering if there are any veterans of the Military Sea Transportation Service. I was stationed out of the Brooklyn Army Terminal on First Avenue. My ship was the Gen. Wm. O. Darby T-AP-127.
I know exactly what he means. Ship's company lived alright, but the troop compartments were something else, especially since it was summer and air conditioning wasn't what it is today. I was aboard in, I think, 1965 or 66.
One of my shipmates on the Darby served on the Blatchford when it hauled UN troops from Dar-Es-Salam, Tanzania to, I believe it was, Pakistan. He told me the Pakistani troops were not used to showers. They used to wash their hair in the scuttlebutt. He said the trip was hot and smelly.
Yes, I was with the headquarters public affairs office. I remember riding the General Blatchford when she returned to New York from the Congo. Met a lot of great guys.
Glad you remember the Darby. We were MSTSLANT. We were 7 or 8 ships that operated between Brooklyn and Bremerhaven. We would stop in Southampton every other trip or so. It was a lot of sea time, but I enjoyed it. Were you in admin?

I remember the Darby was part of our transport division. I was with the Public Affairs Office.
