enlisted in Oregon: assigned twice to VP-46; 16 years in service

Hello all,

Enlisted in Portland in 1974 and was first assigned to VC-2 NAS Norfolk as an aviation supply airman. Got married and was a civilian for 4 years, spent 2 years working in civil service at NAS Norfolk and then NAS Key West during the Mariel Boat Lift from Cuba transferring supplies from nearby ships to support the reuygees as they were processed by the Navy for entry into the US before we went up to Scranton. PA for a few years. Came back into the Navy in 1982 and switched…

I know some of you are veteran crew on a museum ship! So, I need to ask you all this!

There are so many museum ships that are struggling. In these tough economic times, money is shorter than ever. But, my mind harkens back to the war years and the fact that every Navy ship could count on help and sacrifice from their sister ships and crews! There are a myriad of stories of that dedication! It was and is common in not conflict times as well!

So, my question is this! Why are we not seeing one museum ship helping another? In fact, there are cases of isolationism, jealousy…

Hanger 1 Getting Skinny

   For all you aviation-types who ever served or went to school at NAS-Moffett Field, California, be aware that the Navy is solving an aspestos polution problem associated with historic hanger 1 by stripping its metal skin off the frame. (They never heard of sandblasting?) They are beginning on the south door. (Prevailing wind is from the north.)

Navy Dungarees

Now hear this,

 

   For folks who want to recreate the Navy experience or have a bit of history, the company who manufactured dungarees for the U.S. Navy is selling off their surplus stocks of dungaree shirts and bellbottom pants. These are "new old stock" that have been sitting around in storage ever since the Navy began implementing new working uniforms.
