NAF/NAS Midway Island

The US took formal possession of the islands in 1867. The laying of the trans-Pacific cable, which passed through the islands, brought the first residents in 1903. Between 1935 and 1947, Midway was used as a refueling stop for trans-Pacific flights. The US naval victory over a Japanese fleet off Midway in 1942 was one of the turning points of World War II. After spending almost a year standing gate watches at Gt Lakes...I got orders to VAH 6 at NAS WHIDBEY IS...funny thing was no one in the personnel office knew what VAH 6 meant...when I got to Seattle none of the civilians at the terminal knew how to get to Whidbey...so I happened to see 2 guys on Shore Patrol..they said I could catch a bus but tha lat one had already ran..The other said they could give me a ride to the other side of the airport where there were 3-4 Navy prop air craft..finally got a ride in what looked like a Beechcraft,,w/pilot co pilot /radioman..we're taxing down the runway n the radioman is showin me how to put on a parachute!!!..Get airborne get to Whidbey...as I'm gettin outta the plane...while it was still moving ...finally got the seabag out... planes headin for the runway...guy pulls up on a cart asks where I'm goin told him VAH 6...he gives me a ride..got to VAH 6 personel and am told I will be mess coking..at the seaplane base...I'll ad more later...after the numbness leaves my fingers goes away :)
