In August 1972 The New Port News was in Subic Bay. Lucky me on the America. They parked that beautiful ship directly in front of the America. I was doing daily or weekly aircraft inspections on our A7's. I had to down from the flight deck to our compartment and get my camera. This was before the turret blew up. They do have a good website.      See More

USS Newport News CA-148

The second USS Newport News (CA–148) was a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser in the United States Navy. Newport News was laid down 1 November 1945; launched on 6 March 1948 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia. The vessel was sponsored by Mrs. Homer L. Ferguson upon commissioning on 29 January 1949, Captain Roland N. Smoot commanding. She was the first air-conditioned surface ship in the United States Navy.See More

"I did my A-7 training at VA- 174 in 1971 before going to VA-82. I take a memory drive when I go through Jacksonville. Past the hangers,to the F-18 that once was done in VA-82 motif now in some other squadron. You can still see the old main gate…"
