The award I am talking of is the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. I had the chance to see a America cruise book from 1985-1986 from a friend who had served on borad her. I seen the letter at that time but did not think about Ocean Safari 1985 until now.  The Vreeland was part of your battle group during the Libyan Expedition 1986. I have been contemplating joining the VFW and that is how I am questioning service awards now.  The Vreeland never received the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation for Ocean Safari 1985.

Thanks again Jerry,

Hello Jerry,

I was wondering if you still have your cruise book for the 1985-1986 Year Log. I was stationed on board the USS Vreeland FF-1068 and participated in Ocean Safari 1985 with the America Battlegroup we never went into the fjord but provided ASW support in Northern Atlantic. Could you look at that award in you cruise book and tell me if it states the whole unit received the award?

Thanks Jerry,

Hey Jerry, After receiving a note from you a ffew weeks from you I was having difficulty finding my website info to respond.  Good to see you are retired and on to the next phase of our life.  The last time I saw you was at the Naval Station water front.  I was tryio get a final set of orders to Norfolk prior to retirement. I ended up getting orders to Nas Meridian and selling my house in Va Beach!!  I was attached to CTW1.  Then in 1997, we decided to move back home to WV.  I work in Charleston at the WV DMV as a driving examiner.  We bought a house here in Charleston.

Hope all is well with you and your family in Illinois.

Take care and hope to hear from ya soon,

Glen Payne
