  • LOL!  Yes I remember slipping on that stuff.  So funny cuz on the liberty shuttle out to Singapore everyone was neat, sober, normal and behaved.  And after an afternoon and evening of drinking, it was a different scene.  Who cleaned up the mess?  Would it have been easier to scuttle the LCM?  HA!

    Good times there fer sher.

  • My mike 8 boat ran liberty launch duty for the big E in early 70s, I think it was Hong Kong. We were on R&R trip and I talked my crew into volunteering to run the boat for the carrier. (We were TAD on a LPD).
Outbound was smooth, returns later were hell! Carried couple hundred drunks per trip! The well deck was awash with puke.
  • Is it liberty yet?

Is that Anchor Beer on the table?  The Big E visited Singapore a couple of times in 1971.  At that time the city authority was conservative.  Singapore youths were given public haircuts by the cops if caught with long hair on the streets.  And the party bars were in a controled section of the city, (outskirts).  I seem to remember a taxi ride to get out there.  Visiting American sailors were given enough tolerance to enjoy themselves it seemed.  Big E was anchored out in the bay with a lot of ships from all over the world.  Ah yes.  The return trip at night to the ship in those landing boats was something else.  Drunk and listing sailors who had a good time.  Try to be cool as you board now.  No snide remarks now.  After some days, it was back to Yankee Station.

    I took this photo.
