Doug, here is an open view of the rack. You can see a lock box behind that panel. My "guess" is that is an access door for valuables. The buttons or what looks like a slide to me could be a combination lock system.
Robin, it appears the "new" Navy has upgraded things a "little" for today's sailors!
Never had bunks like this in troops berthing on the amphibs I was on. What is the orange thing and the small door to it's left with what looks like a push button lock release?
