Oh that water was indeed questionable; matter of fact it was absolutely putrid. Indeed Typhoid and Cholera immunizations along with a whole bunch of other things I can not spell never mind pronounce were constantly kept up to date.

What was in the water? Well you name it and it was properly there. Sewage, dead bodies, snakes, catfish, jungle debris, cordite, brass shell casings, diesel fuel, JP4, gasoline and any other mean nasty thing you can think of.

Why get  into it? Well the screws of the Alpha Boat had to be kept clear as well as the shafts. The wire I have in my hand is remote detonation wire that had been wrapped around one of the shafts. I would go under my Boat to inspect and clear anything caught on the props and shafts at least once a week. Was I crazy to do such a thing?  Yup! But it had to be done.

  • Rick, I would be honored to receive a copy of your book.  This picture of you in the water.  Reminds me of that song by Rod Stewart.  "Every Picture Tells A Story".  By the way, that metal wire in your hand.  That's off your boats prop?  That water looks questionable.  Was it that full of scrap and junk?  What creatures were in it?  Hope you didn't get sick. Your Typhoid and Cholera immunizations were up to date back then yes?

I am assuming that the other picture you are referring to is the picture of the after ambush where we, the crew of A-91-3, are holding the VC flag and weapons, AK47 we captured from the VC. The one who is standing on the 50 turret and highest of everyone else, with no shirt, is me.

The book has already been written but never meant to be published. It is 571 pages that takes the reader through my two tours in Nam, 1967 to 1970 and then through the hell of 27 years of  PTSD 1970 to 1997. Name of the book is , "The walk back from the edge". If you are interested in reading it feel free to contact me on my E-mail  . . . . a_91_3@yahoo.com   If you really want to read it I will send it to you. No charge, just from me to you.  . . . . . . • Rick, when you write your life novel, especially about your time in Vietnam, (and it must be written), please use this photo in the book's photo section.  This picture says so many things.  Well, to me at least.  I like the other one you posted too.  Which one are you in that one.

  • Hello Adrian Hermandez. . . The water I am in is the Mekong River in the vicinity of Dong Tam, South Vietnam. The props I am clearing are the props of my Alpha Boat, A-91-3 which was assigned to the Mobile Riverine Force, River Division 91. I served on the Alpha Boat, A-91-3 from 1968 to 1969.

  • Most excellent photo.  What is in the water with you sir.
