  • Of all the things that should have been saved when they closed down NTC/RTC San Diego, that sign should have been priority! But alas, as with anything that has meaning and history it was probably thrown in the scrap heap!

Damn shame! A lot of boys were greeted by that sign before they bacame men, Navy men!

  • Arrived at RTC San Diego Aug. 26 or 27 1961 Co. 407. Co. Cmdr. was a small built Chief, can't remember his name, but he left a lot of memories imprinted on my mind. Remember that when we first arrived on Nimitz Island for our first part, he took us to the fence between us and MCRD and told us "If you decide to go AWOL do NOT climb that fence. They will catch you and bring you back, and I do not want a chicken sh#& coward in my company!!"

    We were his first company.

  • Looking at this picture brought back a lot of memories.  The sailor in whites "greeting" the new arrivals looks like G.H. McGuire TM1 who was the company commnder for company 434 in 1961.  This is the exact same picture that is in my copy of the Anchor from 1961.

  • When I got there, it was night, and raining...Not a lot of time to sight see or look at all the pretty scenery...
