  • When I was working on A-6E Intruders (much later in my Navy life), we had a plane with a 500 pounder that hung up, land, and the bomb skittered down the flight deck. Did you know you can pile up 8 or 9 guys on top of me in the catwalk and not hurt me. Of course, if that bomb had gone off I still wouldn't had gotten hurt, only covered with someone's blood.
  • I had a buddy who would use 1 part avgas to 4 parts regular. One day he forgot what he was doing and added another part to the mixture. He grenaded his engine and lost a great looking '57 chevy in the process. No sea stories there.
  • In 1958 we had a 2nd class (AB2) in arresting gear V-2 div CVA-31USS Bonny Dick crossing the deck at nite who walked into the prop of one of these AD-6`s.He didn`t make it.We also had the tanks fall off after they caught the wires during landing & they would skid down the decks causing HAVOC.One time they took the Hook Runner for a ride.On the Flight Deck Heads Up is the first rule to learn.
  • These Spads used the 115/145 avgas (same stuff some guys used in a mix with regular gas for their cars).
